… unless of course your Grandma happens to be Charlie Manson. Thanks to Os, for bringing up the darker side of manga.

Gawth More gawthness

It might sound odd to suggest, but I think in all of us there is a part that is fascinated by darker elements in society. Whether we watch live police chases, check for the latest update on a prominent serial killer, or just are plain fascinated by the fact that there are people out there in the world twisted enough to commit some truly horrendous crimes, we can’t deny it. Dark elements, a-la The Joker (F***k I love you Heath Ledger! ) and the lesser known Charles Manson (oh snap… insult incoming!), are a crowd puller, but what does this have to do with a manga?

I will warn you right now there might be a disturbing image after the cut (unless you are already a serial killer – then it will just be fricken filler).

So um yeah...

Goth, created by Kenji Ooiwa, is certainly worth a read by those of us who have abandoned flowery sparkles for an intriguing storyline. But what can I tell you about this series that won’t ruin it for you? Not much.

It follows the protagonist Itsuki Kamiyama, who has a little fascination for death. Oneday he discovers that his teacher is a serial killer with an obsession for hands, he cuts them off his victims. Well soon it leads to his notice of classmate Yoru Morino. First his fixation seems to be on the fact that she would make the perfect victim, then soon enough that moves onto something else. The two of them share a dark love for death and for seeking out killers, and make a pass time out of it. The manga follows their maladventures…. (yes, I think I made that word up).

it gets more gawth than this i promise .. really!

Goth is an interesting series. I will not deny that it may disturb some readers, so be warned. However I found it an interesting read and one I’ll highly recommend given the chance someone comes along. It’s definitely worth the look, especially if like the rest of mankind, you can’t help but be magnetised by things you pretend not to be. I will not go ahead and write up any summaries or spoilers as half the fun is having the story unfold before your eyes. I also won’t say it rates as the best manga I have read, but it is certainly one of the most interesting. So I hope that you’ll at least check it out and let me know your thoughts.

Thanks for letting me disturb you a little,
Newt

(PS Yes I am under a weird bet to use the word ‘interesting’ in nearly every sentence today. Thank your lucky stars you do not work/live near me)

I wrote about this two years ago. It still ranks among my most favorite manga, because Itsuki Kamiyama is just so awesome.

Yay, you actually wrote about this! I’m happy to see somebody promoting this manga again – it’s only one volume and thus gets forgotten way too easily (or it’s some stupid wannabe gothic kiddies who want to show off with it, urks). Anyways, great post!

Btw, I use “interesting” in every single sentence too! It’s a spreading disease, I suppose, lol.

I’d attribute the great story to Otsuichi who wrote the novels. I have also read Shisso Holiday, another adaptation of his novels – which is a smart story as well, but not as dark and intriguing as Goth.

As you know, I’m more of a flowery shoujo-guy and this just scares the bejesus out of me. BUT, if I have nothing else to do, I’ll check this up.

Oh, and have you seen the American tv show Dexter? It’s about a serial murderer who kills other serial murderers. I have not seen it, but I hear it’s pretty damn awesome. You’d probably like it.
