Manga Weekly: Sekirei 66, Psyren 27, Beauty Pop 38, Love Monster 82, and Vampire Knight 41
Gasp!
Three shoujo titles, one seinen, and only one shounen series on my list this week. How odd. As tempting to include both Bleach and One Piece, I have but minor comments for the pair. All I can say about the former, the old dude sure can kick some ass. As for OP, it’s a shame to end a fun triumvirate.
Going back to the titles this week: Minato adds to his harem in Sekirei; Psyren introduces Hyodou Kagetora; Latest scans for Beauty Pop is released, along with the final chapter of Love Monster; and Vampire Knight sinks into further strange territory.

Sekirei c.66
Minato steals a kiss, adding another, err, person to his growing harem. Will we ever find out if Homura is male or female? Still, Minato’s a stud. He almost has the same appeal as Keitaro Urashima. Close, but not quite.
With every latest addition, the other females exhibit auras of jealousy, unleashing the wrath to their opponents. Though my favorite is Tsukiumi, just because she’s such a tsundere, I’m giving props to Musubi in this chapter for her newfound awareness. BTW, is the bear connected to Yume? I probably need to re-read the mid chapters.
The anime adaptation of Sekirei airs on July, and I’m pretty sure I won’t be watching it. I like harems in manga form, but I can’t stand them in the small screen. Weird, but true.
Beauty Pop c.38
A villainous presence in the form of a Hollywood stylist royalty (or whatever) tries to rattle the Scissors Project members, resulting to rumors of Kiri’s disloyalty to the group. Narumi&co, however, refuses to believe Kiri’s involvement, especially knowing her indifferent personality. At this point, SP fans reject SP group’s assertion of Kiri’s innocence; their misguided notions bring about unjust retaliation.
Fun chapter, I say. Narumi and the rest of SP unblinkingly spurned the idea of Kiri being the person who trashed the club room. Narumi, in fact, actively quieted a few girls attempting to bully Kiri. Heh. Quite protective, and sorta, err, manly. On the opposite end, his father seems to be the head honcho responsible for the incident, with Billy playing as the pawn.
Psyren c.27
A manly man’s man announces his presence with a bang. Yakuza-like appearance with a heart of gold and unadulterated adoration for resident mentor, Matsuri, his purpose is to power up our favorite Psyren players. And I like me some power-ups. All in the name of the fighting genre tradition.
I wish I had ‘discovered’ this series in its mid-game, possibly into its 50s. Reading Psyren in its early stages only makes me itch for faster releases. At this point, questions are abound. To unearth those answers, a weekly dose is needed in the system. I wouldn’t say that I’m thoroughly infatuated right now, but it’s more of a getting-to-know period. Declaring true love will require dozens of chapters and repeated readings. Will it happen? Who knows.
Love Monster c.82 (final chapter)
Love Monster ends. The scans, that is. With all the build up between the supposedly scary Demon King and his legendary clash with the White Crow, it merely reached a drab conclusion.
As the legend goes, the Demon King, as it turns out, was obsessed with the White Crow to the point of erasing other individuals from his memory, causing literal disappearances. To save the world, the White Crow pierced his heart with a sword made out of her last feather. And so goes the angst. Okay, maybe not obsessed. But close enough. Apparently, Hiyo and Kurou were to repeat history. Except they didn’t. And they all lived happily ever after, closing the series with a call back to the earlier chapters’ smutty parts. Fun times.
With the ‘Love conquers all’ theme, it was easy to predict the finale of Love Monster. While I wasn’t expecting major angst ala Buffy’s season two’s finale — where Buffy had to sacrifice Angel to save the world (and so you know, that was epic) –, I awaited something similar but much,much lighter. Alas, we were given nothing. Zero. Nada. Zilch.
Instead of opting for the killing spree, Hiyo chose Kurou. Together, they wished , for a world of where everyone is saved. I don’t mind the cheese. I like cheese. But the execution was lacking. The big confrontation felt as if there was nothing truly at stake and the White Crow’s last feather became a mere plot device.
Suffice to say, the finale was a disappointment. As for the rest of the series, it was a definite read.
Vampire Knight c.41
Dear Ms. Hino,
I am a fan. Not exactly your numbah one fan, but a fan, nonetheless. But I’m not here to discuss your awesomeness. I came with a mission. A request, really. A few them. Here I go.
Can we please end this agony? Like now, please. At this point, all I want to know is which dude Yuki is going to end up with. Yes, I am shallow. Yes, I think vampires are so last year. And yes, I approve of KanamexYuki even if I have to turn blind eye to the somewhat icky aspects of their relationship. (Although I liked Kaname’s line chapters ago when he compared the incestuous nature of their affair to beasts, highlighting — not the moral aspects — but the separation between humans and vampires. An interesting point to explore, but I’m not in the mood.)
As I was saying, Ms. Hino, I implore you to end the torment. It’s fine if Zero is now imbued with uber-powers, morphing into hunter-extraordinaire. I don’t care how you kill Rido. Just finish him off, darnit. He’s nothing more but another bloodsucker, anyway, albeit, ancient and Kaname-proof.
And for another request, can you please bring back the Yuki we all know and love? She’s like a whole different character that I can’t bring myself to read VK regularly anymore. I know it’s all in the service of the story. Still…

Feh. Kaname. I really could care less.
Someone (I think a commenter on Hinano’s blog) made a very good point about Kaname: He’s controlling. Like, really controlling. He keeps Yuki in the dark forever, erasing her memory and whatnot, and doesn’t encourage her to “be all she can be.” It’s like he wants to keep her like a cute little doll, that doesn’t act on her own. It’s one thing to be protective. It’s another thing to be controlling. This chapter kinda highlighted that. A very good reason why I don’t like Kaname.
I’m with you, I just want this to end. This series barely grasped my attention in the first place, and I have had even less reason to care ever since Zero started getting the short end of the stick since . . . . well, for a really long time now. Forget Kaname, if I have to choose an emo boy, I’m going for Zero.

@L-chan: Hee. I won’t even deny this, but I’m shallow and I like how YukixKaname is uber-hottness. YukixZero never came close. ^^; I think Zero rubs me the wrong way. I’ve never warmed up to the dude.
To be honest, VK is getting tiresome these days. I suppose that’s why I don’t even bother watching the anime. I probably won’t be reading the next few chapters. Or maybe wait until the mangaka ends it. THen again, it’s like watching a train wreck.
