Gintama – Watch it, now
I haven’t been watching a lot of anime lately because I’ve been quite bored with the spring season that has only offered one or two shows that I felt was more than mediocre. Luckily for me TJ Han has been propagandizing about a show called Gintama at every opportunity for as long as I can remember and it came to my mind one especially boring day.
I also remembered him saying it didn’t get really funny until like ten episodes in or something and this cannot be emphasized enough. Had I watched this on a weekly basis I probably would have dropped it after like three or four episodes. I’ll even go as far as to say it won’t start being really funny until about 20 episodes in. I especially remember an episode about a ghost around there that was gut wrenchingly funny. I literally re-watched several scenes over and over with fits of laughter every time.
The three main characters are Gintoki, Kagura and Shinpachi that run a freelancing business together, taking almost any kind of job if the money is right. Or so they say. I don’t think I’ve ever seen them get paid for a job and usually Gintoki just solved people’s problem out of the goodness of his heart or something like that. Calling him a good guy is stretching it though, as he is usually a rather unpleasant guy that cares for little other than himself and his sceptical views of things is voiced expertly by Tomokazu Sugita that also did Yuichi and Kyon from Kanon and Haruhi respectively.
Gintoki’s companions, Kagura and Shinpachi, are also superbly casted where Rie Kugimiya gives Kagura a loud and aggressive character with an awesome accent that fits her character perfectly and Daisuke Sakaguchi as Shinpachi plays the straight but slightly apprehensive guy. Other characters of note is the “baka ouji” or stupid prince that has this droning and feeble voice that makes me laugh by just hearing it and the whole shinsengumi gang.
I guess there is an underlying story of how a group of people are trying to get rid of the aliens that has invaded earth but this is something Gintoki and the gang only gets involved with by chance every now and then. The focus mostly lies on random encounters or jobs that they take on. One thing Ginsama has going for it here is continuity, as most episodes start with some kind of connection to the previous episode and makes the mission-of-the-week formula that the show actually follows a lot less apparent.
The missions themselves typically has either a serious or a goofy and weird premise and unfortunately here lies my only complaint with the show so far. Gintama is pretty much just a show that you can relax and enjoy, it’s rare that you’re going to be moved emotionally other than perhaps laughing uncontrollably and the odd manly tear when Gintoki gets serious, and the show’s ‘everything’s well that ends well’ attitude fits poorly with the more serious storylines that for the most part just feels overly cheesy and are generally not as funny as the other episodes.
Still the show is very funny overall and you know you’ve become really picky when you expect every episode to be a masterpiece. The show is surprisingly brutal sometimes but always in a funny way where the brutality just put emphasis on the situation or the joke. It’s a shame I’ve soon caught up with the subs and will suffer from a Gintama withdrawal period but what can you do when the show just leaves you wanting more.

Watched every episode since it started airing, I can’t believe we’re so far into the episodes! yet the subs can’t really keep up with the raws. Definitely one of my favourite!

I’m at episode 111! FUCK YOU SLOW GUYS LOL. Anyway, Rumbel subs suck so make sure you listen closely to the Japanese and don’t rely completely on them.

Ez – Yeah there’s almost as many more episodes as there are already subbed ones. Still, as long as they keep coming I’m happy.
tj han – I’ve noticed they seem to ‘spice’ up the language a bit by making it harsher. Not really a problem as long as you listen to what they say as well, like you said. Btw, I wrote this (damn you Os and your sparkling persona, stealing the show!)

It seems it’s time for me to move Gintama to “high priority” on my to-watch-list on MAL, haha. Of course I have been influenced by TJ, but actually the length of the series really is a push-off. (Thus, ditto to blissmo.)

Well, I was exaggeratinga bit to be honest. Let’s just say it got a lot better after 20 episodes but was still very watchable up to that point. I think you both should atleast give it a chance if you felt that you had to watch 20 episodes was a turn off. 🙂
