We all hate commercials -except on Super Bowl Sundays, apparently. For some reason those are just amazing for most of the country-.

The greatest thing about anime is the lack of commercials. Sure we have to sit through the part where a guy -who I swear is Kusanagi Tsuyoshi- or some woman says the name and motto of a few companies but that’s not so bad. OR IS IT? Leave it to someone to just find another fault in something that’s not so bad after all… You know the part I’m talking about. It happens right after the OP, a little after the 1:30 mark, usually. “Toyota. Drive your Dreamsu”.

Now it’s not so bad in anime as it is in doramas. When you watch a dorama, when they show the grand sponsors segment, what do you see in the background that some of the text covers? YOU SEE SPOILERS. My roomate and I had an argument -which ended in him calling me an “idiot”, so naturally, I win- over this and he sees nothing wrong with it. But I do. I HATE spoilers, no matter how small and trivial it may be.

For instance, say we were watching ROOKIES. In the time when they show the grand sponsors, they may show a fight that happens between the characters later on in the episode. WHY SHOW ME THAT NOW? I just started the episode! I thought they were all great buddies but now we know they eventually get into a fight over something, and now we know what the episodes all about… Okay. Now it’s not THAT bad of a spoiler, but it still bothers me enough that I have to cover my eyes when it comes on.

In anime, it’s less worse. Sometimes, they just show a single image. I love those. Let me read who sponsors the show for a few seconds, I dont mind. For example, the image at the very top is from Gurrenn Lagann. Whod’ve thought that Ronald McDonald had a hand in this epic series? I dont want to see in that few seconds of commercial that Nia almost dies or something like that.

The series that recently (re)brought this problem back to me was Aria the Origination. On my MAL, I rate the first two Aria series a 10 and Origination a 9. Origination was epic, but some things bothered me enough to not give it a “Masterpiece” rating. Though not limited to just this, the one reason was that it did this whole spoiler bit when they were announcing the grand sponsors. Because of that, I learned that Aika dies. YEAH. It’s that bad.

Okay, I’m kidding, but the whole point of this post? My roomate is incorrect, right? I’M RIGHT, RIGHT?! That little bit in between, it can ruin your experience… can it not? Or… am I just that easily bothered?

… damn you commercials. I’m sick of your cavemen and your geckos.

Commercials are fine for me, unless they contain spoilers. After all, SPOILERS ARE THE BAIN OF ALL VIEWERS!!!! D=<

I think you meant to say “the greatest thing about EVIL SEMI-ILLEGAL DIGITALLY ACQUIRED anime is the lack of commercials.” :)

As to who’s right, I’d say… your roommate. I’ve never had anything spoiled during the “blah blah sponsors blah blah” segment.

Aha, commercials — I’ve gotten used to them

This is all new to me since it’s always downloaded fansubs or DVD’s I watch. But I love all the in-show advertising.

It does help that a lot of fansubbers do cut out the ads. At the same time, sometimes those pictures there have awesome screenshots which I probably wouldn’t get otherwise. So I’m not bugged by them. :P

Don’t mind commercials as long it’s seamlessly integrated(lawl) into the show. But yeah, sometimes it’s actually nice to see the ads in the episodes themselves, like Code Geass’ Pizza Hut.

I would say that Japanese commercials seem a lot more better than the American stuff we put up with. As a rule, I can only stand to watch DVD’s of certain shows or how PBS 13 does their programs. Still commercials are a break that networks must have to have money.

I have ripped some audios from drama opening and they have the sponsers voice at the ending, which sounds cute.

The problem with alot of commercials is a lack of creativity. If a commercial comes from a good creative agency, it can be very captivating, and entertaining. However, the dull drab ones far outnumber the creative ones.

An advertiser who recognizes the power of a creative commercial can stand out miles beyond the competitor who simply goes with the dull straight forward message.
