So I Didn’t Finish Gurren Lagann Until the Other Day…

Such a great shot, I have nothing witty to say about it.
Yes, you dont have to tell me. I, myself, am ashamed that I let this off for so long. I’ve actually had it all ever since the day the final episode was released subbed. I was downloading it episode by episode but for some reason, I was caught up on other things and never got to it. I even took it all with me to my first year at college… and just let it collect digital dust in my dorm room. Now that it was summer and pretty much every single person has told me that it made them cry [manly] tears [of manliness], I thought “Might as well”.
One reason that I didn’t continue every week was simply because it was not as epic for me in the beginning… well, now it is when I look at the grand scheme of things. As I was watching it though, I remember thinking that it was cool and such but… Either way. The past is the past. And well, it was indeed pretty epic making me almost shed tears. I say “almost”.
If you’re reading this, I’m going to assume that you too have seen all of it so there may be spoilers.
No, I did not cry when Kamina died. I thought he’s kinda annoying for pretty much the same reason as found here. Your mouth’s too big, man. If his voice was something like Viral’s, then maybe. It was when everyone started to drop like flies that made me almost cry. Something about side characters make me care more for them than say… if Simon died. Those two stupid brothers, may your afros live on forever. It’s the equivalent of saying I appreciate the story more than the eroge cgi or the underage more than the girl, I know, but that’s how this went. That brings me to the only other downside: I thought that it dragged on a little bit for an episode or few. If it ended the episode where the brothers died or the episode after, it would’ve been the epitome of a moving series for me.
I stopped watching around episode 12, so the recap episode 16 was very helpful. That’s when I realized it was more epic than when I initially viewed it -a Haruhi effect perhaps?-. That was one of the most tastefully made recap episodes. I appreciated it greatly and it really pushed me to marathon the rest in three days -okay, so that’s not really much of a “marathon”, 16 episodes in three days… but keep in mind I’m also squeezing in my fair share of Aria, a total opposite in story but a superior is awesomeness-.
All in all, I was glad I finished it and didn’t just let it eventually die -like Gankutsuou or Windy Tales-. It was so long (the gap of time I took between episode 12 and 13) that I even forgot that it was a Gainax production. Of course. Where else does all that emo and just blah feeling come from but Gainax, amirite?
I was waiting to finish Aria the Natural so I could make one of the most epic combo posts ever… but in light of the annoucement of these two movies, I thought I’d tell people the truth that I only just finished GL.

Remember episode 1? “Excuse me waiter, there’s a mole in my salad… and by salad I mean my breasts”

No shame man, I did exactly what you did when you first told me about the series. I watched to episode 12 and it just fell off for me until half way through the first year of college. If someone didn’t come up to me and told me I was missing out I would’ve end up the same way.

It really is difficult to blog about these epic, great shounen series. I find it totally impossible to write about Soul Eater or Eureka 7 myself.
Also… I dropped Gankutsuou and Windy Tales too, lol. Maybe I should pick them up again one day, especially now that my iPod helps me concentrate on series like these *g*

Haha, watching Gurren Lagann was renaissance for me, it’d been so long since I saw and anime so greatly animated, so greatly moving and so epic that I’d nearly forgotten what that feeling felt like.
Yeah, blogging Gurren Lagann is seriously too hard. xD

I had a hard time writing about it, too. There was just so much awesome in that series.

Gurren Lagann was mediocre by the end, sadly. I liked it very much for the first two-thirds or so of the series. That last timejump arc left a sour taste in my mouth. Besides the moon being a spaceship, none of it felt nearly as epic as Simon becoming a man or Simon taking down Lord Genome.

I’m kind of surprised at all the lack of enthusiasm for the finale - I thought that the showdown with the anti-spirals was both advancing a few themes nicely and most pleasing in its outrageousness. I had to push myself through a couple of the less than amazing bits of the show, but always felt rewarded. Also, KittanKittanKittan.

Nobody will reprimand you for taking your time with Aria. I love the show, but it’s not something I could marathon, except for maybe the last few episodes of Aria the Origination.

I was hooked on Gurren Lagann since my friend told me about it and I couldn’t get enough of it…. it was such a good show up until the last three minutes….. Those three minutes killed it for me…… Well I could’ve gotten over the fact that everyone got old if it hadn’t been that Simon’s a friggen hobo now…… And that Yoko got a man chin….. And that Boota is still a pig-mole and didn’t change…..
Seriously if they’d gone with the prologue in episode one for the end of Gurren Lagann I woulda been bawling when the series ended….
